Musical Settings to the Poetry of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel

Singer/songwriter Basya Schechter (of Pharaoh’s Daughter) and ensemble explore the link between liturgy and spirituality in this project that sets her original music to the Yiddish poetry by revered civil rights activist and philosopher Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel
Performance co-sponsored by the Peoplehood Initiative of the Taube Foundation for Jewish Life and Culture and the Koret Foundation, and The Judaica Collection at the Doe-Moffitt Libraries, University of California, Berkeley
Talia Cooper

3:40 p.m. Talia Cooper is a singer/songwriter who speculates that more musical notes have escaped her mouth than words spoken. These days Talia’s original songs weave together her family traditions of activism, humor and Jewish culture. Talia’s songs poke fun at cliches and expose realities, with tones ranging from full on sassy and humorous, to politically contemplative, to love songs with a twist. In addition to her own music, Talia sings with the internationally renowned Jewish women’s acapella group Vocolot.
4:00pm Babel / Ashkenaz

Frank London (of the Grammy-winning group the Klezmatics) and Yair Dalal (Israeli violinist and oud master of Iraqi background) bring together Eastern and Western Jewish liturgical traditions, with percussionist Dror Sinai, bassist Emmanuel Mann, and special guest vocalist Jewlia Eisenberg. |
